All You Need To Know About Nigerian Superstar Wizkid


Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun; Wizkid is a professional Nigerian artiste best known for his proficiency as a songwriter and singer. A native of the Yoruba tribe, Wizkid is said to have begun recording music before his teens. At a tender age, Wizkid formed a music group –known as Glorious Five –with some of his colleagues in church. Back in 2009 and apparently before he rose to popularity, Wizkid was signed to E.M.E (Empire Mates Entertainment) –a record label owned by RnB star Banky W. After the release of “Holla at Your Boy’’ in 2010, Wizkid ascended the Nigerian music scene with great prominence. Meanwhile, Wizkid’s debut single “Holla at Your Boy’’ was released as part of his first album titled Superstar.

Following the immense recognition he earned after the release of “Holla at Your Boy’’, Wizkid took to the music scene and released singles like “Pakurumo’’, “Tease Me/Bad Guys’’, “Oluwa Lo Ni’’, “Love My Baby’’ and “Don’t Dull’’ to complement his first album. Prior to the release of his second album –which he entitled “Ayo’’ –Wizkid released a number of singles including “One Question’’, “Show You the Money’’, “Jaiye Jaiye’’, “Bombay’’, “Joy’’ and “On Top Your Matter’’.

Early Life and Family Background

Wizkid was born in the Lagos area of Surulere on 16th of July 1990. Wizkid was raised in an inter-religious family comprising a Christian mother and a Muslim father. Interestingly, Wizkid is the only male child of his father –a polygamous man with 12 daughters. During his childhood, Wizkid enjoyed listening to the songs produced by music legends such as Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. Prior to the change of his stage name in 2006, Wizkid was previously known as Lil Prinz.


Wizkid has been on the payrolls of some important endorsement brands. In 2012, Pepsi reportedly signed him to an endorsement deal. With the estimated worth of $350,000, the deal lasted one year. Meanwhile, the deal took Wizkid –alongside female artiste Tiwa Savage –to Lebanon to stage a commercial shoot for Pepsi.

In 2013, an announcement by Premium Times confirmed that MTN Nigeria had signed Wizkid to an endorsement deal expected to last for one year. Meanwhile, it was further declared that Pepsi had renewed its endorsement deal with Wizkid and this would make the star artiste a Pepsi ambassador for two more years. Besides Pepsi and MTN Nigeria, Wizkid was awarded endorsement contracts by Guinness in 2013 and Glo in 2015.
